The Bar Has Been Set


            People fear many different things for many different reasons. They fear heights, public speaking, and millions of other things. The American Psychiatric Association has given a name to a problem that is common among young people; they call it Atychiphobia. Atychiphobia is the fear of failure. The fear of failure is like any other fear, it is something that we, as humans, develop throughout our lives. I fear that I will not live up to the standards my parents have set for me.
             At age seven, my family and I immigrated to the United States; I quickly acquired the English language, and within one year, I was fluent in English, therefore, creating me as the family interpreter. I would call government agencies, phone companies, and landlords on my parents" behalf. Because of this, my parents have set very high standards for me, which I am afraid I cannot meet. They brag about me to their friends, and to our extended family, saying, "Our son will one day become a prominent attorney." Although I wish this to be true, I have doubt in myself. Can I really be that star that shines brighter than any other?.
             My family believes in the Jewish faith, and they believe that I should marry within my faith. However, I have a girlfriend who comes from a Christian family. I am forced into a dilemma; should I listen to my parents, or should I follow my heart? I cannot come to a decision. The pros and the cons have leveled the scale, and it is a fear that I have to face in the near future. Can my parents accept who she is, or will I have to abandon my love, for the sake of my parents? .
             People often make mistakes; some try to correct them, while others persist on making them. Parents try to guide their children away from the mistakes they themselves have made, by instilling morals, manners, and beliefs in them. However, at the same time parents create a path in which they wish their child to follow, which causes kids to put their goals aside in order to satisfy the parents.
