Problem Solving and Conflict Management
Problem solving and conflict management are important parts of our lives because problems can be found anywhere from families to government, and in any age, race, gender or culture. In order to fully understand what these concepts are, one must know the basic meaning of problem and conflict, and how they relate to each other. A problem is a discrepancy between current and desired conditions and is solved by creating a change to these conditions, bringing them closer to that which is desired. There are two parts to problem solving: 1) problem analysis, where you are identifying the problem, where it is, why it is, and its details, and 2) decision making, where you are deciding on a course of action and choosing a decision which are very important. These elements work together because you need a decision in order to actually solve the problem. Problem solving includes assessing the situation and identifying the actual problem. One must also define the goal-what one wants to get out of it and analyze the forces that change the situation. Although they are not the same, problem solving is part of conflict management, because problem solving implies a concern with the causes of the problem, which eventually lead to conflict. They go hand in hand. Problem solving is a more methodical approach that deals with the actual change of conditions leading to a solution. It is more specific and focused on one task, an example being in an office. A client was promised a certain report at a specific time and the key person in charge of it did not show up to work. The problem may not just be the fact of the person’s absence, but if there was a way to still communicate with them, or even why there was no alternative person who knows how to produce the report. The solution would have been produced using the skills and models in problem solving. Conflict management is a more analytical process that correlates with the sources and nature of conflict, and shows ways to manage and even prevent it. One major conflict that can be seen here in Miami is the Elian custody affair, where Cubans still believe the young child belongs in America, and not in the hands of a communism country. This is a complex conflict that deals with many underlying factors and circumstances that needs the skills
