Sylvia Plath:Superman and Paula Browns New Snowsuit

“Superman and Paula Brown’s New Snowsuit” by Sylvia Plath is an emotional short story in which a young girl’s innocence is destroyed when the reality of the world pierces her environment. The present and growing threat of war make the bright vibrant colours of this young girls childhood fade into dull neutrals. This theme is conveyed by many techniques, which Plath uses to highlight the young girl’s loss of innocence. Plath brings through the voice of a young child by using first person narration, characterisation and the use of colour to show how the girl is forced to change as the world around her changes. In this essay I intend to explore the themes of the story and also the techniques Plath uses to convey them.

The voice of a young girl is often heard when reading “Superman and Paula Brown’s New Snowsuit”. This is due to a few factors. Sylvia Plath has written this short story in the first person, which is a good narration style to allow the reader to connect with the character. “I told you what happened, and I cant make it any different. Not even

The use of colour shows that this story starts in a pleasant fantasy but ends in an unpleasant reality, the growing “shadow” is ever creeping towards the girl but her bright lively colours mask this and it comes as a shock when she realises what is really happening in the world.

“Our Superman games made us outlaws yet gave us a windy sense of

The innocent child fantasies that invade the girls day and night life are where the most emotion is brought through, as the dreams of flight and Superman mask the true reality of the world: -

“The lights of Boston that blazed and blinked across the darkening water”
