book report of The Old Man and the Sea


            
             Ernest Hemingway presented his novel "The Old Man and the Sea" in 1952. For the quality of his work he won the Novel Prize in 1954. The author put his thoughts in a way that the readers got attracted to the story. Every page has uncertain expectations about what could happened to the old man, a fisherman that with his perseverance and strength of mind was trying to get what he wanted, a truly big fish. The story described the old man as a person that had struggle fishing, it took place in Cuba, the two main characters, Santiago and Manolin had an intrinsic relationship, and all the events that the old man when through to reached his goal.
             The novel started when Santiago was going through a period of bad luck. Every day before the sun rose he would go out to the sea and try to catch fish. The days were passing and the old man could not get anything from the ocean. He was an old man "the blotches ran well down the sides of his face and his hands had the deep-creased scars from handing heavy fish on the cords. But none of these scars were fresh. They were as old as erosions in a fishless desert." (10) He lived alone in a "shack " . The best company he could had were his dreams about the old times when he was a strong man and everybody called him "The champion."(70) .
             In the Cuban village were the novel took place the main activity to survive was fishing. The manhood was proof each day the fishermen were at the ocean and the amount of fish the could bring back to the harbour . Every person knew that Santiago was having a hard time on it. Something was happening with the old man's luck because, it was gone. In the town it was like a ritual that after a long day out in the sea everyone would go to .
             the "Terrace." Every night when the old man arrived the "Terrance" the younger fishermen would make fun of him and his bad luck. Others more respectful just talked about the difficult times that on occasions the sea present to them.
