Anagnorisis - The Moment of Recognition in Literature

Anagnorisis - a literary term referring to the "moment of recognition" of a previously unsuspected truth. The concept was defined in Aristotle's Poetics. It is considered an essential part of the plot of tragedy, in which the protagonist's recognition of his tragic flaw occurs at the climax and leads to his downfall. The best-known example occurs in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex when Oedipus discovers that he has unknowingly killed his father and married his mother. Also can be seen in Shakespeare" Othello when Othello has wrongly killed his beloved. The management of a good plot concerns the relationship between peripetia (a special turn in the action what we might term today the climax) and anagnorisis (the recognition of what brings about the peripetia). These two aspects of plot should be close together and should appear naturally. The end of both peripetia and anagnorisis should lead to a catharsis for the audience. .
The perfect plot, accordingly, must have a single issue: Oedipus wants to solve the mystery of the curse that is bringing plagues and disasters on their city for an unclean act which has gone unpunished and can only be saved by "the payment of blood for blood" and the banishment of the culprit - The murderer of King Laius. the change in the hero's fortunes must be from happiness to misery; and the cause of it must lie not in any depravity, but in some great error on his part; Othello believed only what is told him by those who come to him first; he buys Iago's tale of deceit based on a handkerchief and words, and does not trust his wife in the least. The man himself being either such as I have described, or better, not worse than that. The anagnorisis or "moment of recognition" when the truth is at last revealed being the true emotional crux or climax of the play - either succeeding or preceding the most dramatic events.
The whole process that tragedy shows is one in which man plays his part; we cannot know how large the part is, but tragic writing must illustrate the idea that man somehow contributes to what happens; without knowing that the polluter is himself, decides Oedipus to re-open the case and become his own worst enemy by investigating the past.
