“Morrison’s commitment to historical remembering arises from her concern about the ignorance of and even contempt for the past that she sees in both contemporary African American and postmodern culture.”

Does this novel stand the test of time or is it dated? Yes this novel very much stands the test of time. Not only do blacks question their freedom we have so many different nationalities that feel the same. You don’t hear so much about their history and how they have progressed from there past as much as you do with the African Americans. There were scares that were physical and there were the scares not apparent. Black, white, green, or purple we all have some hidden rememories somewhere. The North America has been trying to make up for the repression of the black community, but something like the color of your skin as a minority is more important then any qualifications. Sethe offered some hope for the future-founded on the love and endurance of women. While the unforgiving past must always haunt us-as Beloved haunts 124, as slavery haunts the ghettoes of the United States. Today with the combined efforts of poor whites and poor blacks may deliver the beautiful future hope that we all desire to attain.

The Style is not a tale told from beginning to end. It is a story that is surrounded with levels of the past, from the slave ship to Sweet home, as well as the present. Sometimes the past is told in flashbacks, sometimes in stories, and sometime it’s plainly told, as if it were happening in the present. The novel is, in essence, written in pieces and left for the reader to put together. The past with present serves to reinforce the idea that the past is alive in the present, and by giving us fragments of work within the entire story is to make us think more about it. Beloved is meant to be more then a story-it is a history, and it is a life. For an example at one point, Paul D and Sethe exchange flashbacks that meld into one whole feeling, of people. Another point is where the novel switches off between four white people, who show the biased point of view of some men who view slaves as tamed animals.

Then the characters are few but many in a lot of ways. Like the main character Seth being the central figure of the novel. She was once a slave, but fled with her four children. A month after escape she was discovered and in an effort to keep her children out of slavery, Sethe murdered one of them.
