Ethnics

I know I am supposed to write about the issues and topics discussed in the class and the readings, but since this is my first journal entry, I thought I would add in a little bit about myself in addition to my views about the topics discussed in class. Just something so you know a little bit about where I"m coming from,. .
So I made it trough my first week of College. This transition from High School was a little bit over whelming for me. You see I come from Akron Ohio, which is a small city, but, well it's bigger than BG. Anyway still I"m not used to seeing so many people in one area like in Bowling Green. And as far as school wise, I am used to small classes but now I have about 3 lecture classes with around 300 people or so. it's really amazing for me and exciting at the same time because I am meeting so many different people from all different backgrounds. This I feel is really important. I came from an all girl Catholic school, which was predominantly white. In my graduation class of 43, there were 2 African American girls, including myself, graduating. This in a way has helped me to be more open with other people outside my own race., although I"m a pretty outgoing person non the less, but I have never had a problem with communicating with other people, because I like learning more and more about a person and their culture. In my school there were not a lot of people of color ( anyone not white) and so coming to Bowling Green is something of an eye opener for me. so many people with so many backgrounds.
All right, now I will go into my thoughts about my first week of Ethnics. I know in Ethnics we are talking about the understandings of race and ethnicity. This is an issue that I think deserves great attention, because there is a difference between the two and I think there is more focus on race than ethnicity, which, to me, is more about culture.
In class on Thursday, we did a little activity where we had to write down what we thought went with the idea of race , (What we though race was), and the same with ethnicity.
