Practicality of Group Work in College

A recent article in the BG News was written about the lack of practicality in having college students work together as a group effort to complete work. The article raised the question of why not have college students working in groups. Is group work less beneficial in college, and only beneficial at lower levels of learning such as high school or junior high? Group work is a process that can be far superior to any methods of learning and has many benefits for the students to gain from.
The many benefits of group work include students being able to accentuate their strengths and work through their weaknesses, as each person in the group can bring something different to the table. Also, the stress involved in a group becomes a lot lighter than one individual trying to make sure every angle of the work is covered. Furthermore, group work becomes more of a non-personal level of study, that is, one student does not feel responsible for every small aspect of the work. Finally, group work is a very practical method in the real world. Many occupations require work to be done by more than one person.
Some people are naturally prone to a weakness in areas such as public speaking or writing. Work done in a group, allows this barrier to be crossed. A group allows people with different skills to work together. A group may consist of one person who is a fine speaker, one who writes clearly, and one who know how to present the ideas of the work in a clear message. When all these skills are put together, the finished result may be a job very well done.
It may be argued that group work only hinders the student's ability to further develop skills in these areas, when in fact the opposite may also occur. If a student is not very developed as a public speaker, being in a group with someone who is can be very rewarding. The poor speaker has a chance to work with someone who can help them develop their public speaking skills by teaching them methods and tricks to making it easier.
