War

Looking back one year from today on the terrible acts on September 11, 2001 there were many leaders one could right about and their traits in regards to leadership. The person coming to mind when I think of leadership on September 11th was not someone in the news. This person was not in New York, Washington, Pennsylvania or at the Pentagon. This person was located here at Northern Illinois. Lieutenant Colonel Payne is the Battalion Commander with NIU Army ROTC. .
Striking me the most on was the actions taken by LTC Payne during September 11th. LTC Payne showed his passion for Cadets, NIU, and the Army during the horrific events. He called every Cadet throughout the day to make contact and made sure our families were okay and if we needed to talk he would be available. He showed his concern for us and how our reactions to this situation.
Many of the Cadets were very upset and wanted to take action right away and enlist into the Army to be there first hand to defend our country. LTC Payne guiding vision on this situation was looking out for the development of our education and future service to our country. He counseled us, showing intentions to stay in school, earn our degree, get commissioned and then go defend our country. .
By being an officer, in not only today's Army but with the future, you live by the seven leadership traits. The Acronym LDRSHIP clearly defines how to enhance your leadership. Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal courage are areas to focus on to be a quality leader in the military. LTC Payne is the fine example of these seven traits showing them all during the events of 9/11 that changed U.S forever.
