The Real Gem
I saw light and felt the air around me for the first time on the sixteenth of February, year 1989. Jemimah Grace was the name given to me by my Journalist and Pastor father, Mr. Arnold G. Jemimah, is one of the daughters of Job, and Grace is God’s loving kindness. From the moment I was placed at the side of my mother, Connie G, the showers of love and kindness started. Being the only daughter, I grew closer and closer to my parents as days and years go by. With a childhood completed by a jigsaw puzzle of people, adventures and experiences, my early and present life was made valuable by my mom and dad who completed the puzzle for me, placing the right pieces at the right place, and setting aside those not needed. One of the best pieces that they have placed is the foundation of my education – the New Jerusalem School, a private Christian school. Studying and learning with fellow Christians has made my studies fun and effective. Each day was filled with laughter, teachings and surprises. Achieving the first honorable mention in prep, I strived harder in first grade and went home with a gold medal hanging on my shoulders on my first recognition day in elementary. She was completely calm, fighting back tears as she was telling this, but the moment she admitted that growing up without a father and a mother guiding her made her feel incomplete, envious and pitiful, she really weeped. Her father has another family but the more hurting part is that they are the second one. She is separated from her mom who stays in Bulacan, while she lives with her aunt. When we got back to the room, I approached her, held her hand against mine and looked straightly to her eyes. Her eyes tried to avoid, until her eyes met mine. I talked about how fortunate we are to all have a complete and happy family when I noticed Love’s familiar jolly face and smile fall. I always remembered her words for I believe that pieces of advises and lessons learned is the key to success. After her recount, I felt drops of tears rolling from my own eyes. I knew that very moment why she kept it from us all these years – she didn’t think she could handle the passionate outburst she would make.
