Similes in A Dream Deferreed Analysis

A person can use a dream as something they may want to accomplish or receive in real life. A deferred dream can lead a person into serious problems. Problems coming from a deferred dream can be things such as depression, suicide, anger, and heartbreak. This poem shows the reader what those affects can be. By knowing what this poem is about, a person can now examine the similes involved. “Does it dry up/like a raisin in the sun?”(Lecture notes). This simile tells the reader that a raisin, something already dry, can dry up even more. By having something so dry and hard, there is no way to get inside of

it. There is no reason to keep it except for what it was worth before. This relates to the modern world. People want to do what they do best. But, if they allow themselves to be involved in things that do not use their talents and let them shine, they will fade away. There are many people in the world that do not use their talents, thus losing their talents.

In conclusion, Langston Hughes did a wonderful job on using similes throughout his short poem. Because many of these similes relates so wonderfully with a persons life, I think that Langston Hughes could be considered a type of psychologist. By giving so many similes to a dream deferred, a person can realize what they may be doing to themselves or to others because of these types of dreams. After some thought about this poem, the acknowledgment of what the similes mean can help anyone regard this poem as an inspirational one.
