Cell Cars
Finally there is a car that doesn’t harm the air that we breathe, animals, or the water that we consume. I am talking about fuel cell cars, the wave of the future. Car manufactures like General Motors, ford, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz jumped on the bandwagon and came up with cell fueled concept cars that they hope will be released in the future. Well, the future is now! What exactly is a fuel cell? Well it is an electrochemical energy conversion device that coverts oxygen and hydrogen into heat and electricity. It is like a battery that can recharge while you’re drawing power from it. Instead of using electricity to recharge the fuel cell you use oxygen and hydrogen. Fuel cells use a Direct Current voltage that can be used to power lights, motors, and any other electrical appliances. There are a variety of fuel cells. They are arranged by the type of “Electrolyte” (A substance that dissociates into ions in solution or when fused, thereby becoming electronically conducting.) that they use. How does a fuel cell work? A cell is made up of four major parts; those four pa
There is always a negative side to go along with a positive side, and that no different from fuel cell cars. For example, unlike gas, hydrogen doesn’t have its own refill station on every corner. To prevent this problem there is a device called a “Reformer”. The reformer produces hydrogen from alcohol fuels. But there is another hunch; the reformers produce other gases that can damage and lower the efficiency of the fuel cell. There is a bright future for fuel cell cars. Nissan started testing their fuel cell car called the “Xterra FCV” (fuel cell vehicle) in April 2001. Nissan is now working on making higher-efficiency FCV’s. The release date for the Xterra has not been released yet. Ford has successfully produced a FCV version of there well selling car the “Focus.” The Ford “Focus FCV” is going to be on the market in the year 2004. Mercedes-Benz announced that they are working on a fuel cell concept car in a form of a van. The release date for this concept car has not yet been determined. General Motors has produced a concept car called the “Auto-no
