Socialisation is the process where an individual leans to become a member of society. Meaning that who we are is shaped by the social structures around through socialisation. Even though the way we are socialised shapes who we are, this does not mean that we do not take action and take things as we are taught. As individuals in society we have the power to take action and make choices that can benefit us. In other words our identity is build as result of interaction between structure and agency. According to Elsa van Huyssteen (2002) socialisation is “the process through which an individual learns to be a member of society”. Which contributes to survival of society so that they can fit in and contribute to the proper functioning of society. Socialisation also helps to protect and maintain the norms and values of that society.

According to Durkhiem (1858- 1917) societies that have organic solidarity tend to develop individualism. Individualism is when people “persue their own interests to develop their individual talents, which increasingly differentiates them from others in society”. As individuals and sharing being individuals as a norm can bring about a new form of collective conscience, which can hold society together.
