The Dangers of Breast Implants

Why do women get breast implants? Do breast implants make them feel good about themselves? Breast implants can be a serious threat because, there many health risk involved. Images portrayed by the media will make people do almost anything to fit American standards of the perfect body. Plastic surgery offers a quick fix to help achieve this goal. When one chooses to get breast implants they have to consider more than the cosmetics. They have to take into consideration; the different types of breast implants, the many costs, the actual procedure and the health risks size effects that may occur. Breast implants are one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery in North America. The desire for bigger breast is only one side of the story. There is another side of this story that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. These are the stories of thousands of women who have suffered tremendously after having breast implants. Stories such as: one woman had to have both implants rupture and had to go through a painful surgery to have the implants removed and to have the silicone scrapped off her ribs and tissues. This woman still suffers from chronic joint pain and headaches. Another woman also had her implants rupture but

There are two types of breast implants. Saline filled and Silicone filled implants. The Saline filled implant was designed by Dr. Hilton Becker Mentor Corp. in 1984 the use was primarily in breast reconstructive patients to gradually expand the severe trauma to the tissues. By the late 1980’s the Becker expandable implant gradually wound its way into the cosmetic breast augmentation market.

The next implant is the Silicone-filled implant. There has been so much controversy in the last two decades pertaining to the silicone implants. The Silicone gel implants have not been used in the U.S. since 1992. They were banned by the FDA (Food Drug Administration) because of reports that linked silicone with connective tissue diseases such as arthritis and lupus. Since the 1992 ban a recent National Institute Health report found no link between silicone and any connective tissues. As a result to this there has been a push by some groups to reintroduce the silicone gel implant. The most commonly used implants in the U.S. are the McGhan and Mentor smooth rounds, Silted rounds, Mentor High Profile, Contoured Profiled Spectrum, Textured Rounds. Those are just to name a few.

Between Jan 1, 1985 and Sept 17, 1996 FDA received 103,343 adverse reaction reports associated with silicone breast implants and 23,455 reports involving saline implants. The reports included risks clearly associated with the devices, as well as adverse effects attributed to the implants.

Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size and or alter the shape of a woman’s breasts through the use of an artificial implant. Women can choose to have this operation either as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery to balance different sized breasts or to enhance the contours of the body. Whatever the purpose women can expect larger, firmer and more visually satisfying breasts.
