Orenthal Simpson

Orenthal James Simpson enjoyed a successful career as a star running back, great American football player. Simpson was acquitted on October 3, 1995 for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. He was born in 1947, and was known by his knick-names O.J. and “The Juice. Simpson won the Heisman Trophy in 1968, and was installed into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. After his retirement from football Simpson became a sportscaster and an actor.

During his childhood Orenthal James Simpson had to wear leg braces due to a severe case of rickets, a disease which causes softening and weakening of the bones. This disease didn’t stop him from achieving his goal as an athlete. He was bowlegged, a great runner, born in the slums and lived in the projects. The fact that Simpson was a great runner helped him escape the slums and become a football star. If it had not been for football, Orenthal would not have attended school. Simpson wanted to work with youths; he wanted to show them he had something so they would respect him. Simpson had a very good relationship with the Los Angeles Police Department. They admired him as a celebrity and would often be his guest at the Rockingham mansion. Simpson also attended some of the Los Angeles Police Department events. When Nicole called the police to help her they would refuse to charge Simpson with a crime, all except one officer Mark Fuhrman. The LAPD admired him so much when he fled in his Bronco they trailed him, communicated with him by phone and allowed him to surrender voluntarily to save him the embarrassment of a public arrest. Simpson finally surrendered and pled not guilty to the charges. Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman were murdered and O.J. Simpson was the suspect.

The verdict of not guilty split the American People. The African Americans cheered because a black man had used his talents, his gifts, and his ability to use the system to get the verdict no one thought was possible, and white America felt justice was not served because they were seeing a murderer go free. O.J. Simpson had civil charges brought against him for wrongful death. The judge in the civil trial did not let the defense introduce theories about a conspiracy. The jury ordered Simpson to pay compensatory damages of $8.5 million and punitive damages of $25 million.
