Laughter, the Best Salesman

I have chosen to compare two commercials that use humor to market their product.

The first commercial I have chosen is a Snicker’s candy bar commercial. The commercial starts with a shot of a football game, in which a player has just been brutally tackled to the ground. The coach, referees, and medics rush out on to the field, and crowd, concerned, around the fallen player. As he comes to, the player tries to assure his coach that he’s still fit to play. The dialogue goes something like this:

Coach: Son, do you know where you are?

Player: (dramatically) I’m Batman!

Coach: Maybe you should sit out for a while.

As the player sits on the bench, you see him unwrap a snickers, and take a large, caramel dripping, bite while the narrator says, “Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a Snickers!” The commercial ends with different scenes, depending on which version is being played. One version ends with the injured player leaping around the sidelines using a towel as a cape and yelling, “To the Batcave!” Another version ends wi

What I liked most about these two commercials was that their plots had nothing to do with the product that was being marketed to the audience. They were hilarious, and always kept the audiences attention, because they didn’t give a real clue as to what they would do next. The plot of the first commercial was basically used to emphasize that fact, but the Batman amnesia had nothing to do with Snicker’s bars. Likewise, though it may be seen as an inconvenience or maybe even a slight crisis, most people don’t equate a lack of milk with their chocolate chip cookies to hell. What these plots did do was make the commercials extremely memorable, and that alone is enough to boost product sales.

Lastly, each of these commercials are part of a successful series of advertisements. The Snicker’s commercial was one of the first to use the “Not going anywhere…” theme. This series is still going on, the latest commercial being one for the 2000 presidential elections. The “got milk?” commercials have been run on print and on film for the past few years. This pitch has been so successful that people have even started keeping these ads as collector’s items. Their print ads have had a showcase of celebrities ranging from Mia Hamm, Florence Griffith Joyner, Superman, Batman, Larry King, Alex Trebeck and the Backstreet Boys.

My next commercial is an old “Got Milk?” commercial. It starts with a scene of a man on a cell phone, walking down the street. He’s dressed in an expensive suit,
