Brave New World

The book I read was Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. This was the first book I've read by this author and I don't have very much previous knowledge of him. The reason I chose to read this book was that I thought it had an interesting description located on a list I found of suggested books to read. After reading this book I think I would enjoy reading other books by the same author.

The main characters in this book were Lenina Crowne, Bernard Marx, the savage (John), and Linda. The main female character is Lenina Crowne who is 19 years old. She is a Beta lab worker. Lenina goes to the reservation with Bernard and that’s where they see the savage and Linda. Bernard Marx is one of the most important male characters. He is an Alpha Plus Intellectual who works at the Psychology Department of the Central London Hatcheries and Conditioning Center. Unlike most people in the world he lives in he doesn’t agree with society, he also feels alienated from others because of his physical characteristics. Some think that alcohol was accidentally put in his blood-surrogate and it caused him to be shorter and thinner than most males of his social status. John the savage is the song of Linda and Tomakin. His mother, Linda, was impregnated by T

"But I don’t want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin." Huxley p.246. I chose this excerpt because I think it says a lot about the theme. It's important because it is from a different perspective than all but a few characters in this book. John has not been conditioned to think certain things about the civilized society so his opinion seems like it would be more accurate than others that are programmed to think good things about society would. He is expressing how true life requires good and bad things. He's saying that without danger, or art, or freedom it's no longer really living.

After Linda dies, John sees a group of Deltas getting their soma and he tries to tell them to throw it away. A riot starts and Bernard and Helmholtz come to help John. The police come and calm the riot with soma vapor and John, Helmholtz, and Bernard are brought to the world controller’s office. The world controller tells them that Bernard and Helmholtz will be exiled. After Bernard and Helmholtz leave John retreats to a lighthouse and tries to purify himself by whipping himself. Soon reporters start coming and then people start coming after the feely. They demand that John whips himself and then Lenina arrives. The scene becomes intense and turns into an orgy that John takes part in. In the morning he wakes up and is so ashamed he took part in something he despised and hangs himself.

I would definitely recommend this book. I enjoyed the author’s style of writing and I thought he did a good job of keeping the reader interested in the book. It was entertaining because I've never read a book like it. The writing style was very original, and kept me wanting to know
