Sexually explicit material: Pure pleasure or risky to enjoy?
Sexually explicit material, can it be viewed for pure enjoyment or can it be a risky thing to enjoy? I am going to discuss whether or not viewing sexually explicit material (magazines, strip shows, films) causes men to become sexually aggressive. First I am going to talk about the general consensus that I found when discussing the issue with my friends, both girls and guys. Next I am going to compare their answers to two studies I have found on the issue. I will then conclude my findings and bring up any questions that are in need of further research that may have risen while doing my research. I started my research on the issue of whether or not sexually explicit material causes men to become sexually aggressive by first asking my boyfriend and his friends what their opinions on the topic were. All but one said that it would not and does not make men sexually aggressive. Some of them commented that it would definitely make them more sexually inclined, but not more sexually aggressive. Meaning that it would just make them want to have sex. However, a few of them did say that if you were already sexually aggressive, then you would probably be liable to view sexually explicit material more often. The guy that said it woul
(p<. 027) and of Sex * Video * Rape (p<. 027). I came across two articles that have researched the issues of whether sexually explicit material makes men more aggressive. The first article I looked at compares juvenile male sex offenders and juvenile non-offenders. The purpose of this study was to find whether or not there was a relationship between various sexual attitudes, use of sexually explicit materials, prevalence of prior adult sexual contact, and offender status. The subjects they used in this study were 80 convicted juvenile male sexual offenders and 96 non-convicted males that attended an urban high school. For their procedure, the researchers first got the approval of each individual that they interviewed using a printed consent form, which had resources that were available to them if they found the interview upsetting in any way. They presented each individual with a 56-item questionnaire composed of both Likert-type scale and “Yes/No” questions. The questions included items on social deviance, family structure, attitudes toward sexual morality, and empathy towards others. Looking at the individual dependent variables, they found that there were significant effects mainly on the participants’ perception that the victim probably got some pleasure from the intercourse and the participants’ judgement of whether the victim really got what she wanted. Also, it was the males that were more likely to say that the victim got pleasure from the rape and got what she wanted. So is sexually explicit material safe for guys to view, or does it make them sexually aggressive? Research still needs to be done in this area, but one thing is for sure. Videos or images that portray women in an objectifying and degrading way do skew men’s realities of what they think women want. I believe that the girls I talked to that said it does not make guys more sexually aggressive probably view this material with their boyfriends so they don’t think that it would have this effect on guys. They could also hold these views because they too believe that it is just something that all guys do, therefore they don’t think it would have a negative effect on them. It has become normal for them to think that all guys do this as well. The other half of the girls I talked to that said it would have an effect probably see sexually explicit material in a different way. For instance, one of my girlfriends said that the girls in porn videos are either totally submissive to the guys and let them take total control, or the girls are hardcore porn stars that are very aggressive as well. Guys see this and assume that girls like for guys to be sexually aggressive and rough with them no matter what the situation.
