Changing Self
“ Every thing must change, nothing stays the same” To what extent is change an inevitable part of life?‘Nothing is permanent but change’ as stated by Heraclitus. Change is a process, transition or growth, it does not end itself, it is how one responds to a particular situation or state in life. The growth of a person is the importance of change rather than whether the change is positive or negative. It is evident in ‘Away’, by Michael Gow, ‘The Door’, by Miroslav Holub, ‘Secrets and Lies’, by Mike Leigh, that change is an inevitable part of life. ‘Away’ is set in the summer of 1967. In the play ‘Away’ Coral goes through significant changes. In the beginning of ‘Away’ Coral’s solilquay shows her as a tragic figure and Roy reinforces distant from society, “You’ll have to take stock, come back to reality”, Coral replies “ I mightn’t like it there”, which shows she hasn’t come to terms with the loss. Next Coral is seen with Rick having intimate conversations in this scene we see Coral desperately trying to find her son within Rick, in their conversation Coral says “ You’d have made into the army easily…”, “You’re still alive. All the text types show that change is an enviable part of life and something that all humans will experience in life is someway whether it be a growth in self, acceptance of self or understanding of other issues. Change can be positive or negative, no one can determine what the effect will be, but the most important thing about change is how the person accepts and uses the change. The film ‘Secrets and Lies’, written and directed by Mike Leigh, film, is a heart warming film about a single mother (Cynthia) & her 21 year old rebellious daughter Roxanne struggling to survive. Cynthia’s world is full of mixed emotions of the present and the past. Hortense, Cynthia’s other daughter was adopted out at birth. After the death of her adoptive parents she seeks her biological mother Cynthia & causes turmoil in her and her mothers world. We see the relationship between Cythia and Houtence grow as they adapted to the change they have made in each other’s lives. Cynthia’s brother Maurice & his childless wife throw a family 21st B.B.Q for Roxanne and the families ‘Secrets and Lies’ are revealed. Cynthia’s past has lead her to be withdrawn & now with Hortense’s arrival she lets out her inner feeling and wants to be truthful with everyone which in turn changes her familles lives. Through talking they learn to appreciate each others situations and change their feelings and emotions about each other.
