Hawaii
These lovely islands were discovered by the Polynesians, who gave them the name Hawaii. When Captain Cook discovered Hawaii, he renamed them The Sandwich Islands. This information was culled from From Mauka to Makai. I have also added some dates of my own.The State of Hawaii is comprised of eight major islands. Measuring from its submarine base (3,280 fathoms) in the Hawaiian Trough to the top of the mountain (13,796 feet), Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world with a combined height of 33,476 feet. The 2000 resident population for the State of Hawaii was 1,211,537 persons, with a de-facto population (including visitors) of 1,334,023. (Between the 1980 and 2000 Census counts, Hawaii's population grew 25.6 percent). Hawaiian is a Polynesian language spoken on all of the inhabited islands of Hawai?i with only minor dialectical differences between them.In the nineteenth century, Hawaiian became a written language. At the same time, it became the language of the Hawaiian government in public offices, the courts, the school system and the legislature.
