Character Traits of Lord of the Flies
During Lord of the Flies, William Golding illustrates many character traits which he believes are authentically human. Each character that Golding illustrates has a single purpose of representing one core emotion or quality. Many scholars believe that Ralph is the only character in the story who possesses a round personality; Therefore, all of the other characters purposes are to provide a contrast of Ralph. Golding cleverly engineers the novel this way to provide a more intricate plot and conflict. Ralph is the protagonist of Lord of the Flies and is the epitome of a modern day hero. To be a hero, one must understand evil and righteousness. Ralph does; he is a static character who remains true. However, during the pig hunt, he lets his belligerence shine through. In the conclusion however, Ralph does not deviate from his path of virtue. Ralph contains all the traits that each single boy possesses, such as savagery, heroism and logic. The three boys that possess or paradox these traits are Jack, Piggy and Samneric. Jack serves as the opposing force to Ralph, his nemesis. Lastly is Samneric. Samneric represent cowardry and conformity. When Samneric join Ralph in confronting Jack, they are taken prisoner. During the conflict, Samneric offer very little resistance to their captors. “Oh I Say!” “Honestly!” (Page 198) exhibits the amount of resistance Samneric offer. This is an example of a lack of courage, they are afraid of being hurt. After the interrogations, Samneric succumb to Jack’s request and join his tribe. This is an example of conformity. Samneric forget what is morally right and betray their friend Ralph in order to save themselves from torture. Furthermore, they betray Ralph yet again. Ralph trusts Samneric not to tell Jack where he is hiding but the twins inform Jack nevertheless. This again is an example of cowardry. Samneric give away Ralph’s position in order to save themselves from torture. However, Samneric are not the only cowards on the island, they represent the entire tribe. Everyone is in fear of Jack, Samneric are simply the best example out of the entire group. These events illustrate to the reader that Golding believes cowardry is a crippling flaw that humans possess. When put under pressure, humans will buckle. Throughout the novel many conflicts arise due to the opposing traits that the children possess. Coincide
