A Little Night Music
Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music is the story of a mismatched couple finding their way to their true loves, and a married couple finding their way back to themselves. Throughout the story there is a variety of twists and turns that make the story sometimes humorous, at times sad, but always entertaining. The story begins as a very tangled, sexual, web that the characters keep weaving until the truth is revealed in the end. A Little Night Music carries us to a magical summer night set in a Swedish countryside, at the turn of the 20th century. The magic comes from the presence of the old, Madame Armfeldt, and the young Fredrika, her granddaughter. The story consists of a middle-aged lawyer, Fredrik Egerman, and his teenage trophy bride, Anne, with whom he has never had sexual relations in spite of the fact that they have been married for eleven months. They live with Fredrik’s son, Henrik, from his first marriage, who is only one year older than Anne. Beside the lack of intimacy, things seem to be going well for the couple until they attend a comedy at the theatre that features Desiree Armfeldt, an ac
tress with whom Fredrik once had an affair with. Desiree is currently having a liaison with a married man, Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, whose wife, Charlotte, is a friend of Anne’s. Fredrik and Desiree decide to renew their previously intimate relationship when Carl-Magnus shows up and is quite put out by the fact that his mistress is stepping out on him. He asks his wife, who knows of Carl’s infidelity, to talk with Anne, hoping that this will end any further relationship between Fredrik and Desiree. Meanwhile, Desiree is setting up her own plan and has her mother invite Fredrik and Anne to their country home for the weekend. Carl-Magnus, learning of the weekend plans, decides that he and wife will also go to the country as uninvited guests. It is here in the country that the tensions between the couples begin to rise. Charlotte reveals to Anne that she intends to sleep with Fredrik in order to make her husband jealous and force him to return to her. Meanwhile, Henrik reveals to Fredrika that he has fallen deeply in love with Anne. The couples gather for dinner and Henrik smashes a glass, reprimands everyone
