Religion

The state of religion in the life of a person is a complicated, ever-revolving situation. If three different people, each having a different religion, were asked to define the word ‘religion,’ I would almost certainly hear three different definitions, which brings me to the thought of meaning being constructed. Each person has their own unique individual experiences that no other person may have the same exact one. As discussed in class, these experiences are then converted to interpretation, and then these interpretations are institutionalized, which is the process of accepting and rejecting what holds to be valid or misleading. Because of human interpretation, the universe then becomes a meaningful place. Otherwise, we would just be human bodies roaming around with questions marks in our minds lost and finding reasons for our existence and how things function around us.

The thought of meaning being ‘constructed’ has never came across my mind till the discussion held in class. I honestly always thought that meaning might have been given from a source of greater power that passed on his or her words of wisdom to someone else, who then passed it on to other people. The relationship between meaning and ‘reality’ is that meaning is derived from our experiences, and when it is an experience it is reality. Our life revolves around a meaning or a purpose and reality is a way for us to live that purpose or meaning through experiences. It is an important way of not only expanding our knowledge, but also enables us to strive to become even better as a person. Without experience, there is no meaning. For example, you can not plant and grow a seed without the soil; thus, soil is essential when planting a seed. Furthermore, we learn more about ourselves; we find out what triggers our emotions; we find out what stresses us the most by the different situations we place ourselves into. Then as we get older, we change mentally and physically and we become well-established in our world views and become reluctant to give them up.

The relationship between meaning and reality is that our experiences are reality; therefore, from our experiences we construct meaning. By our experiences, we are able to change if not the world, then ourselves. I do not think people think of changing the world first; it all begins with us. We must think of changing ourselves first before we can think of having some sort of impact in the world. Thus, as we obtain meaning from our experiences, we use these meanings to make sense of our lives. For instance, we can never predict whether the outcome will turn out good or bad unless we expe
