Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

The strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
The respectability of Victorian society was that there was an upper class, a working class and a under class. If a working class person lost their job they wouldn't get any benefits and would be forced into the under class. The under class was where all the crimes came from. The streets were dimly lit by the street lamps. These streets weren't very clean either, as the people would chuck muck and worse out of the windows onto the pavements. The river Thames was one of the dirtiest rivers, as it was full of diseases and if you caught one you would die. What was important to the Victorians was their religion, you had to go to a church and women had to marry.
Also Stevenson has made a comparison between good and evil within his work. He suggests there is a good and bad side in everyone. The Victorian society was starting to feel less compelled to uphold the rules that were expected of them. An example of this is Utterson: the honourable lawyer who admits to having "drunk gin when he is alone". To drink gin was something that one of the working class or under class people would do, not a respected lawyer. So the supposed respectability has is gone here.
Further-more the settings in the text between the front and entrance of the house that Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde reside in is that Jekyll uses the front entrance of the house and the back entrance of the house is used by Hyde because he tries to sneak in the house. "I saw Mr Hyde go in by the dissecting room". This shows that Hyde is sneaky. "Hyde shrank back with a hissing intake of the breath". This is about his animalistic. This is the upper class side of London as street lamps are well lit, so this is another reason that Mr Hyde uses the back entrance to the house. This is also symbolic, that each character uses a different entrance to the house.
You can compare the character traits of Jekyll and Hyde. Jekyll's character is shown as being respectable well-known scientist, who has a likeable personality and a handsome appearance and a good job.
