Marijuana has been proved as a safe natural medicine that can be used effectively as a treatment for a variety of illnesses such as: Cancer, Glaucoma, Alcoholism, Epilepsy, AIDS, and Multiple Sclerosis. Medicinal use of marijuana dates back to the ancient Chinese Emperor Chen Nung, over 5000 years ago (Grinspoon 3). Until recently in history have civilizations considered marijuana use unacceptable and an act of intolerable proportions. The benefits of marijuana in the pharmaceutical aspect is tremendous, one affordable herb could easily replace numerous overpriced drugs that flood the market with minimal negative effects on the body. Other legal drugs are not as safe, but still are sold over the counter. The use of Marijuana should be allowed for medical purposes, and the Federal Government should change its laws towards this natural substance. Cannabis sativa is a hemp plant that grows in warm weather, or inside under strictly controlled conditions. There are sixty- six different kinds of marijuana but they are commonly classified in ten groups (Bock 4). Marijuana’s main chemical component is THC or tetrahydrocannabinol. When people would drink alcohol they were more moody, and more likely to react in a bad way towards conflicts. In another study done in the Bahamas where marijuana is not used as much, admissions to mental hospitals for alcoholism were 55%. In Jamaica were marijuana is popular, the amount of people entering the mental hospital for alcoholism is less then 1% (Cohen 183). The use of medical marijuana has already started in some stated, but the federal government is needed for a nation wide regulation. There are many benefits to legalizing this natural plant, it can be used to easy the pain of cancer patients and many other terrible illnesses. With more money, scientist can find efficient ways of taking this drug so it can not be abused by its users. With the national debt so high, the federal government could step in and grow marijuana and make a profit, while eliminating drug dealers and potential violence. The choice should be up to the American citizens that control there bodies and have to deal with the pain of an illness. Why won’t the government consider marijuana a prescription drug? Before a drug is put onto the market it must first be sifted through a number of studies by the Food and Drug Administration. After these tests are conducted a decision is to be made—do the benefits outweigh the risks. Should these same rules be applied to marijuana? Some States are beginning to permit certified patients to use marijuana.
