Tanzania originated from two countries; Tanganyika and Zanzibar which united after Tanganyika, 1961, and Zanzibar, 1963, were granted independence from Britain. But in the 19th century Tanganyika and Zanzibar were two completely different nations. Although both nations were coastal areas and contact with other nations became quite frequent, neither country had considered becoming a united country until the 1900s. Along with the rebellions border disputes broke out between the Germans and British when WWI was declared and battles erupted along the borders eventually resulting in German victory. The nations were finally put under the control of the United Nations Trusteeship after WWII but were still a British protectorate. In 1963 the nations united and became Tanzania.
