Mario the Magnificent

He started his hockey career with a goal in his first shift and on his first ever shot in the NHL. He led the Penguins to 2 Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. During the 1992-1993 NHL hockey season Mario was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease and had to undergo treatment for the disease and came back and continued to lead his team. Mario will always be recognized as a hockey hero.

Mario came into the 1996-1997 season healthier than ever and it showed by leading the league in scoring for his sixth time with 122 points. Mario told the world the sad news of his retirement from the NHL that year. The most memorable part of this incredible season was when he received standing ovations and congratulations from the opposing players and the fans in the later part of the season. The Penguins where in the playoffs and in his last game Mario scored but the team was still defeated by the Philadelphia Flyers on April 26,1997. The game ended an era of one the greatest hockey heroes and legends of all time, or did it?

Even after Mario’s retirement from the NHL he was still involved with the Penguins. After buying the team out of bankruptcy Mario became the primary owner of the Pittsburg Penguins in the summer of 1999. In
