Thomas More

In the time of Sir Thomas More (around the 1500's), there were many religious and political problems in Europe. Due to this, More, wrote a book called, Utopia. He wrote this as a way to address the issues that he saw as problematic in his society. Utopia, is about a traveler who comes to a new place that is the perfect society. In this society there is a strong economy, and there is a strong King. The king of this land respects all religions with the exception of atheism. There are also education and work for all that live in this fictional land. This includes men and women. In Utopia, More, puts great emphasis on ideas of discipline and work. There are no poor people in this land, because there are no idle people. All people work and the trade that is done by father and usually passed down to the child. More also shows the importance of women in a society. There is some bias toward women in this society, but examining the society in which More lives in himself, women in Utopia are unusually treated an adult and not children. One of the other thing that More highlights in this book is the education of people. All are educated, and treated equally in the mind. Many religious thinkers and early poli

tical thinkers who address the same issues years later after More’s death. Religious thinkers, such as Luther, and Calvin, and political thinkers such as Locke, and Hobbes, address the ideas set fourth in More’s, Utopia, through religious beliefs and civil laws.

In conclusion, it seems that the Utopia, reflects not only it’s society, but the opinions of others also. There are examples of More, in the works of Hobbes, Luther, Calvin, and Locke. This shows that Europe in the time of these men was in a state of disarray. There was chaos with most royal families and deception with the Church. These men all sought for a more stable and modern society. These men all wanted a society where men were free, educated, and there were fair rule. This was the type of place that More wrote about. The Utopia, opened the doors to many more modern day thinkers in Europe who dealt with More’s concerns on a more realistic level than the satire that More wrote.

The Utopia, also deals with the making and abiding with and by civil laws. In the Utopia, there are laws regarding everything. To keep civility there were laws for working, playing, traveling, and even free time(More 266). This is a refection of the time in a very direct way. In the time of More, there were no laws made to protect civility unless they in some way benefitted the “powers at be.” Most laws political and religious were made to scare the people into a box and keep them from ever questioning and moving up in society. The government in Europe at this time was made up of the church and a monarchy. All popular thinkers of that time are in disagreement with much of the government’s power. This could be because the image the government gave was mostly malicious and
