The Salvation Army
The name Salvation Army immediately brings to mind the memory of a clothes drive, or a person outside a store collecting spare change. Most people know the Salvation Army as a charity organization dedicated to helping establish the less fortunate. Though now it is a household name it was not always so widespread and common. What started out as a small local mission to assist the poverty stricken citizens of 19th century East London eventually expanded to aid hundreds of countries and become one of the leading charity organizations of the world. The Salvation Army has helped thousands of people throughout the years and all over the globe. The Salvation Army arose from a dream of a young minister trying to find a way to help the urban poor. William Booth, an ordained minister, one day began preaching God’s word to the crowds of people in the street. He was discovered by some missioners who were holding a meeting and asked him if he would speak. On July 2, 1965, this meeting was held in a tent in the slums of East London. Booth “brought to the poor and wretched good news of Jesus Christ and his love for all men.” (Hosier 31) The feedback he received from the people made him realize that he had found his destiny. Today, the Salvation Army does a lot of charitable work in many parts of the world. Nowadays, the Salvation Army works in just over 100 countries using more than 140 languages. There are over 14,000 corps as well as a wide range of social, medical, educational, and other community services. The world wide organization includes 21 different programs. (The Salvation Army) They have accommodations for the homeless that homes more then 35, 000 people throughout the year and has 800 hostels for them. Occupational Centers were established to contribute to the rehabilitation of the people who come within the Army’s care. They have 152 homes for alcoholics and a network of drug rehabilitation programs around the world. They help the blind with their 18 institutes providing for more than 1,600 blind people. They also help the physically handicapped by having 30 purpose-built house providing for 1600 handicapped people. They help the deaf, with their 14 leagues in operation. Over 250 canteens are mobile to the needs of military personnel. The Salvation Army have traced over 10,000 missing relatives during the past year. They also have anti-suicide counseling, aid for students, and more than 2000 food distribution centers, They care for the elderly , work amongst children, have educational facilities, family welfare aid, 130 centers for refugees, leprosy programs, and convalescent homes. Over 27,210,00 patients our cared for by the Salvation Army’s health care plan, using their 352 clinics and hospitals throughout the world. It was “adopted in the interest of a more effective warfare against evil.”(Murdoch 47) This military style of organization makes for good mobility and discipline.
