Beowulf

In the Anglo Saxon Epic Beowulf, the protagonist Beowulf is a warrior with extreme determination which aids him in gaining glory and fame. However, this proves to be problematic because this extreme determination also leads him to take instantaneous action without thinking of the consequences. Unfortunately, this behavior results in his fatal death.

Determination is the firmness of purpose. Beowulf shows examples of his strong determination over and over. For example, when Beowulf "heard how Grendel filled the nights with horror"(197) he becomes determined to go and set sail to meet the king to gain glory and fame. "Would sail the sea to Hrothgar, now when help was needed."(200-201) In this quote the words "would" and "now" are essential because they portray the willingness and immediate response from his determination. Beowulf volunteers willingly and quickly, calls for a boat to meet the king as soon as possible in order to go after Grendel. Without any hesitations, Beowulf did not expect any dangers, let alone death, but rather glory and fame.

This attribute of willpower is seen again when Beowulf hears of Grendel's mother. Hearing of her vicious attacks, Beowulf suddenly becomes determined and "

In conclusion, Beowulf¡¯s determination gained him glory and fame. It is evident by the creatures he¡¯s killed, oceans he swam, and battles he¡¯s won that Beowulf¡¯s determination aided him greatly. His determination gave him a reputation and a title as the strongest and bravest warrior there ever was to men. However, Beowulf¡¯s determination did on the other hand prove to be problematic. Even though Beowulf succeeded in the earlier portion of his life, his determination would bite him and turn against him in his old age. This is shown in the battle between him and the dragon. Beowulf had a strength of mind and strong willpower which allowed him to never fear and never lose, but it also clouded and hindered this thought that he was now old and had limitations as a mortal. ¡°I¡¯ve never known fear; as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me.¡± (2511-2515) It is obvious in this quote that this willpower allows this thought of old age to become obscure. He admits he is old, but still seeks fame, challenging the dragon, and underestimating the creature. The determination of seeking glory and fame clouds the true thoughts and worries of Beowulf and acts as a stimulant to encourage Beowulf to go on and obtain this eminence no matter what the cost: even death. Therefore, even though Beowulf was strong, mighty, brave, and eminent because of his determination, He was also very unwise, reckless, foolish, and imprudent due to his determination. His greatest attribute gained him glory, but it also
