Buildings
ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT: The Building Environment Public architecture affects our neighborhood in many ways. Even though we don’t realize it, it molds the way we live and the way our town is perceived. I will be speaking about two of my favorite buildings in terms of formal and cultural considerations. My first choice is the AMC 20 Movie Theatre in the City of Industry. Obviously, this building is used for entertainment purposes. First of all, the location of the theatre was a smart move. In the beginning, the theatre was split into two mini-theatres: the AMC 4 and AMC 6. Also, the seating arrangements were horrible. You would see the person’s head right in front of you no matter where u sat. Now, the theatre has been expanded and is connected to the Puente Hills Mall, which has been around for a long time. Their business has now sky-rocketed. This AMC is right in the middle of cities which have different “classes” of people. La Puente (next door to City of Industry) is a city with more of a lower/middle-class population and known for minimal gang violence. Diamond Bar, which is after City of Industry, is more of a middle/high-class city and is mostly occupied by the Asian community. The location of this
The way the AMC was built brings a cool feeling to anyone who sees it, no matter who you are. The building is now huge, very modern almost futuristic, and also includes hangout spots where people can chat and smoke. The outside was specifically designed to what was going to be installed inside. When you walk in, it’s very high-tech. Everything is electronic. There are also many video arcades. One problem of this is that it can be very intimidating to people who don’t really have that much money. One could feel as if they don’t belong in that area, in that building, as if it is too “rich” for them. To people who are “well-off”, the place is heaven. Although they are very high-priced, there are concession stands everywhere you turn to prevent long lines. Now for the theatres: each one was built for maximum comfort. All have digital Dolby sound, love seats, stadium-seating for full view, and reclining armrests for extra comfort. The next building I chose was the St. Denis Church in Walnut, one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever been too. One look at it, and you know that the inside is going to be marvelous. It can almost be considered a mansion. There are beautiful flowers everywhere. Even the quad is huge. The fountain, located right in the middle of the building, shoots up like a geyser. Around the fountain are little booths that sell coffee, donuts, and other sweet treats. One time, I actually saw a clown giving out free balloons to some kids! I thought that was kind of strange, but, oh we
