Moby Dick
Moby Dick by Herman Melville is a story about one ships crew and their efforts to find the great white whale Moby Dick. The story starts out when a Massachusetts schoolmaster ,Ishmael, decided to give up teaching to go and live his dream of whaling. Leaving Manhatto, he traveled to New Bedford where he would seek out work on a whaling ship. When he arrived in New Bedford he went out in search of a place to spend the night. After finding that most hotels where full he finally found one place, the Spouter Inn. He talked to the owner and found that he would have to share a room with someone else, he hesitated but took it because it was all he could find. He went to his room and started to go to sleep when a huge man covered from head to toe in tattoos came in. The man’s name was Queequeg, which after talking to him he found to be quite nice. They became quick friends and decided to sign on the same ship, the Pequod even after being warned that the captain was a madman. The ship left port on Christmas Day and for the first few days they never saw the captain. Finally one day the captain, captain Ahab, came up onto the deck, he was an odd looking character, he had a scare from the top of his face all the
way down his neck and a leg made out of a whale’s jawbone. They sailed on for a few more days in search of a school of whales. Then one day Ahab came up on deck and nailed a gold coin to the mast and said whoever spots the white whale Moby Dick will have this coin for a reward. All the men except for the First and Second Mates Starbuck and Stubb were enthusiastic about the challenge. Starbuck told of the Ahab’s madness and how he had already lost his leg to Moby Dick and was obsessed with killing the creature, but none of this seemed to bother any of the crew and they stayed enthusiastic. The captain, Ahab, had heard that the last spotting of Moby Dick had been near the Cape of Good hope and wasting no time the captain set sail to find the great whale. When the ship had made it to the Cape of Good hope the crew spotted a group of Sperm Whale and busied themselves with harpooning the beasts and melting them down to whale oil. After they had caught they whales they came upon another whaling ship and the captain wasted no time in asking if they had seen Moby Dick. The other ship had no information about the whale but the captain warned him not to seek out such a beast for it has sunken many ships.
