Censorship of The Giver by Lois Lowry
In The Giver, The Community exercises sameness in order to eliminate prejudice and other problems associated with the products created by differences between individuals, differences between groups, and differences between wholes. The First Amendment to the Constitution states that Congress may not “….[abridge] the freedom of speech, or of the press…”, but no place in the Bill of Rights constitutes authors and artists the ‘right to be heard’. Without memories and differences, the citizens know no better and in their minds, and they exist quietly with every necessity and need for life. With anything less than regular practices, life would be chaos. But, as Mortimer Adler states in his book Six Great Ideas, ”Our natural freedom consists in freedom of the will. It is freedom of choice—the liberty of being able to choose otherwise than as we did. Having such freedom, our actions are not instinctively determined or completely conditioned by the impact of external circumstances on our development, as is the case in the behavior of other animals. People wanted to keep it on shelves and in schools because people can only be afraid of what they do not understand, and experiencing the fantasy of a novel is the only route to appreciating good writing. Studies have shown that children who read more, on or above their reading level or the average reading level do almost 40 percent better on standardized tests and college exams later in life. All good things take time and patience, including a higher level of intelligence, but while the student is reading anyways, why not enjoy? The student should be able to choose whether or not a book is appropriate for himself, or even interesting, and in the long run, will decide what in life will help or hinder their being. Free will should be exercised early in life to give children a good sense of what is to come. Depriving children and young adults of certain books will only lead to worse, just as depriving children and young adults in The Giver only led to disaster, as proved by Jonas descent into what only he could comprehend.
