The year 1785 brought a strange discovery to scientist Henry Cavendish, who saw that not more than 1/120 of our atmosphere was made up of some inert element. This notation was ignored for more than a century until Lord Rayleigh and Sir William Ramsey, both British, discovered something. They realized that nitrogen prepared by removing oxygen from air was different than nitrogen from chemical sources such as ammonia.
