Qualities of a True American
“The principles of this country are no mere abstractions; they are written in the hearts of all true American’s.” That was a quote written in “What is an American?” from Edward L. Hudgins the director of regulatory studies at the Cato institute, and its one that I truly believe. Webster’s Dictionary may tell you that an American is anyone who has obtained citizenship in the United States, but they are much more than that. There is no diagram that explains the characteristics of a ‘true’ American but in the heart of every American citizen exists their own opinion of what they believe makes some one an American. It’s hard to put into words exactly what that is, but I know that all true Americans are a little bit of the following. They are brave, patriotic, hard working, and know and enjoy their freedoms. St. Jean De Crevecoeur, a French aristocrat who immigrated to America and became a citizen of New York in 1765, discovered the freedoms that America brings. He defined America as, “a land of happy farmers and a haven of equality and freedom for the oppressed and dispossessed of Europe” (Crevecoeur). He could not get enough of the fact that anyone from any country could come to this great land and through hard
Crevecoeur’s opinions are great because he actually has first hand experience with being a poor man from a less fortunate country and seeing all that America has to offer. He knows and respects the great freedoms in this country. “Can a wretch who wanders about, who works and starves, whose life is a continual scene of sore affliction or pinching penury; can that man call England or any other kingdom his country? A country that had no bread for him, whose fields procured him no harvest, who met with nothing but the frowns of the rich, the severity of the laws, with jails and punishments; who owned not a single foot of the extensive surface of this planet? No! Urged by a variety of motives, here they came. Everything has tended to regenerate them; new laws, a new mode of living, a new social system; here they become men: in Europe they were so many useless plants, wanting vegetative mould, and refreshing showers; they withered, and were mowed down by want, hunger, and war; but now by the power of transportation, like all other plants they have taken root and flourished! Formerly they were not numbered in any civil lists of their country, except in those of the poor; here they rank as citizens” (Crevecoeur). These are just a few characteristics of what I believe an American should be. We should all be brave, patriotic, hard working, and know and enjoy our God given freedoms. These are definitely not all that an
