Dreams and imagination are looked upon as expressions of our deepest desires and fears. Even though people might not think much of their dreams, these dreams help mold what we do in life by showing caution to dangerous actions or helping to follow certain actions. Tim O’Brien uses emotion to describe the inner feelings of man at war and how things are there while Nathaniel Hawthorne uses imagination and dreams to show how man is percept. The writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Tim O’Brien focus on the inner life of dreams, imagination, emotion and conscience to show the truthful information on peoples lives in their stories.

They provide good descriptions and help the reader understand what is actually happening in the story.

Hawthorne also uses man’s conscience to allow his characters to do the right thing. At the end of Young Goodman Brown, when his dream of the congregation in the forest is over, he can no longer look at the town’s people with the same perception as he used to.
