College Core

1 Each year millions of college freshmen start a journey working towards a degree in the field of their choice. To achieve this degree, they must take the mandatory college core classes that cover a wide variety of material, as well as the classes required for their degree. In obtaining a four year bachelor’s degree, a student will spend on average two of those years taking core classes covering subject material that most likely will have little or nothing to do with his or her major. I agree with the distinguished professor of English at the University of Kentucky, Wendell Berry, that remedial “core curriculum” is not necessary and that these courses just lower the expectations of educators at high schools and elementary schools. Berry said, “If universities teach high school courses because the students are not prepared for university courses, then they simply relive the high schools of their duty.” I believe colleges should not require students to take core classes due to the lack of relevancy to their majors, and the waste of money and effort, for both the student and the college.

2 Going to college is a major financial decision. Tuition is extremely expensive and is constantly rising. E

5 Graduating earlier would also let students become productive members of society for a longer period of time. Even though education is very important, time spent studying and doing homework for dispensable classes could be used in a better way. Students can better serve society by joining the work force and doing what they went to school for. Also, if students got in and out of school faster, the college would save money by not needing to hire as many employees. This would help keep tuition costs down.

4 The reduction of time needed to get a degree would also help students get into the work force faster. I agree with Berry that “career preparation is best and most properly acquired in apprenticeships under the supervision of employers.” By getting into the work force faster, students would have more time to be taught by more experienced specialized people in their field, which is an education that they could never receive in the classroom. I know many people that have graduated and gotten a job and have had to been re-taught things by their employers. A reason for this could be the long education time required to get a degree which would not be as big of a problem if students got out of school faster.

3 I have witnessed first hand how many people fall behind financially because of college loans. For a year I worked in the financial aid office at Baldwin-Wallace College. Every day I dealt with people trying in every way possible to afford an education, but in the end were very far behind financially and would have to spend a number of years trying to pay off their loans. College costs are also directly affecting my family. Having two children in college is straining my parents’ budget. This affects our everyday life style due to a tighter spending plan. We no longer have extra money for leisure activities. All of our money is going towards tuition and necessities. I believe that if the college core was elim
