Cleopatra Queen of the Nile

Cleopatra lived from 69 B.C. to 30 B.C. and was the last queen of ancient Egypt before it fell to the Roman empire. She played a major role in Egypt’s history. She was intelligent and ambitious. She had a lot of sadness in her life, but at least she found love. William Shakespeare wrote a play about her, called Antony and Cleopatra, in 1607, and she is famous, even today. Her amazing story includes her family of pharaohs, her love for Julius Caesar, and her love for Mark Antony.

Cleopatra and her family were not Egyptian. They were from Macedonia, a country in northern Greece. She was the only member of her family that learned to speak Egytian. She took advantage of his weakness towards women. Like Caesar, Antony was captivated by Cleopatra. Cleopatra loved Antony, too. Like Caesar, Antony was married. While Antony was visiting Egypt, his wife was killed. Cleopatra was disappointed that instead of coming to her, he married Octavian’s sister, Octavia. That same year (46 B.C.) Cleopatra had twins, a boy Alexander Helios and a girl Cleopatra Selene fathered by Antony. Cleopatra was upset that Antony wasn’t coming back and that he married someone intelligent who was younger and more beautiful, and intelligent. In 39 B.C, Antony and his wife Octavia moved to Athens, Greece. Then, in 37 B.C. he went back to Cleopatra in Egypt. They had a sort of marriage ceremony before having another son, Ptolemy Philadelphos, in 36 B.C. Octavian got mad at Antony and Cleopatra and declared war against Cleo
