She Stoops to Conquer

An aspect of She Stoops to Conquer that makes it notable among satires is that its characters are aware of the fact that they are actors playing created roles with intentions of making an audience laugh. In the play’s prologue, Mr. Woodward makes an address in which he proclaims, “When the sweet maid is laid upon the bier, / Shuter and I shall be chief mourners here,” (11-12). The character of Mr. Woodward acknowledges Ned Shuter, the actor who played the role of Hardcastle in a production of the piece done in 1772. Marlow admits that the first thing that attracted him to Miss Hardcastle was her physical appearance, yet he very soon admits that there was also genuine emotion in his attraction. He also shows to her the value that conversation between them holds. The conversations they share are what make him more and more fond of her. He also tells her that with time he appreciates her simplicity that comes from that time and finds it to be refined. This coming from the individual who exuded sheer snobbiness toward Mr. Hardcastle and his attempts and service and was nothing but wretched toward Kate shows Goldsmith’s central theme of love conquering all other aspects of life whether they be based on money, power, or prestige. Also, the fact that Marlow demonstrated such a dramatic switch in character values at the end of the play shows the impact that love has on an individual no matter how incapable of loving he may seem to be.

Paying more attention to the theme of the play as opposed to its comical satire, the character of Mr. Marlow shows his very sentimental side toward Miss Hardcastle as he professes his true feelings for her and his desires to be with her and make her happy. This dramatic change in behavior shows itself at the end of the play, which gives the audience ample opportunity to see this character’s development from a rude, shallow individual to a man who is willing to let his guard down in the name of love. Marlow’s superficiality and inexcusably pompous behavior is nowhere to be found in his profession to Miss Hardcastle about his feelings.:
