Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson, one of the greatest men in American history, successfully led our nation through World War I. His firm beliefs and action created the lasting remembrance of being a champion of democracy. “As a spokesman for humanity in a world crisis, he stood for integrity, purity of purpose, and responsibility.” (Mulder) Wilson advocated many social changes in America that alone would have given him a lasting legacy. These include the vision to see a Federal Reserve System created, the establishment of the Federal Trade Commission, and many labor laws, including important steps in banning child labor. Wilson had a great vision and these government programs and bills are a great example of his desire to improve America. However Wilson’s greatest accomplishment was not intended for America

alone, but for the world. Wilson leadership during World War I made the world safe for democracy.

Wilson presented his fourteen points in a speech to congress on January 8, 1918. These points would forever make the world over a better place. These points, intended for a peace settlement for World War I, included: free trade among nations, open seas, both in peace and in war, independence for various nations being held down by foreign rule, the rebuilding of war torn nations, and most importantly a league of nations that would give promises of political freedom and territorial establishment to nations powerful or not. This speech gave Germany a clear-cut way to appeal for peace and end the most horrific war anyone had ever witnessed up until that point. After an armistice with Germany was signed
