It was the ways of the ruler Verona, the ancient feud of the two families, and the bitter townspeople that shattered the love between Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet. The entire city of Verona was at fault for the deaths of these two individuals in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Many of the actions taken by the different characters somehow, either directly or indirectly, lead to the story’s tragic ending. Every member of the town seemed to be either on the Capulet’s or the Montague’s side; there was no neutral party. In Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet fell for each other at first sight, even though their families had been in a fight longer than anyone could remember. Their secret wedding was quickly put together with the help of Friar Lawrence and the Nurse. Both families were full of hatred towards each other, when little did they know, they were all united because of their children’s marriage. Friar Lawrence had offered kind advice to Romeo and Juliet and made their secret marriage work, but also, he was probably the most important character leading to their death. Friar Lawrence was responsible for delivering a letter to Romeo saying that Juliet was alive, that she had drank a potion to make her appear lifeless. He gave this duty to Friar John, who was not able to deliver it in time. Romeo saw Juliet, who appeared dead, and killed himself. Moments later, Juliet awoke saw Romeo lifeless on the ground, and took her life also. If the delivery of the letter had been successful, Romeo and Juliet would have both still been alive.
Family members of Romeo and Juliet doomed their love from the very beginning. “…By my count, / I was your mother much upon these years / That you are now a maid…” Lady Capulet told her daughter in act one, scene the, line 37, pressuring her to get married to the respectable Paris, and soon. Juliet marrying Romeo would be the last thing to enter the Lord and Lady Capulet’s minds. Juliet didn’t reject her mother’s idea, but later, had ideas for marriage of her own.
