Cathedral

Do moments of redemption come only to people who are worthy? Don’t be so sure. In Raymond Carver’s, “Cathedral” we see that this moment of vision is possible for any ordinary Joe. Carver’s regards on redemption are expressed clearly through a man who learns to see with his heart rather than a judging and jealous eye. Experiencing the company of a blind man allows him to perceive the world through other senses.

This man has lived his life with the same routine for many years with his wife and only his wife. He has no friends that his wife can recall because of his inability to open up and his tendency to be non-communicative. Obvious to the reader, the marriage between the two is not going so well. When he speaks of his wife’s past, which includes a past marriage and attempted suicide, he is very unsympathetic. He knows she enjoyed writing poems and all he has to say is he, “didn’t think much of (them)”. In addition, the wife has a past friend that she still continues to have a great relationship with. This man is blind. Her husband can’t grasp why she would ever want a friendship with a man that he believes to be superior to. He has judged this man before ever meeting him simply because he has no sig

ht. Finding out that this blind man, Robert, is coming to visit, he refuses to help entertain and jokes by suggesting, “ Maybe (he) can take him bowling”. Being so inconsiderate to his wife’s feelings, she is forced to comeback boldly with “ If you love me, you can do this for me. If you don’t love me, okay.” With love in question, it is evident that the marriage is might be continued because of routine and comfort, rather than love. Furthermore, he “wasn’t enthusiastic” about Robert’s company because he wasn’t “anyone he knew”. His unwillingness to meet Robert leads one to believe he is jealous of him, yet would never come to admit it.

Once one is proven wrong, the willingness to learn more increases. The husband admires how Robert has “done a little of everything”, lived such an adventurous life. The amount that this man has done without his sight is so much more than he can ever imagine himself doing even with his sight. When Robert starts to ask him about his life, he answers short and to the point, avoiding any personal connection between them. He is afraid that his unhappiness might be discovered, so chooses to hide and keep himself closed off. This avoidance of conversation is done in fear of being understood. He feels the need to put up barriers to people by using his condescending attitude. In addition, the husband avoids the awkward silence by offering Robert dope, and is surprised when he accepts for the first time. Robert’s optimistic view on life allows him to try anything once, and that there’s a “ first time for everything”. His readiness to try something new is really
