Movies and Reality

The question has been stated, "Do movies reflect reality, or does reality reflect the movies?" In Nathanael West's, "Day of the Locust" he paint the picture of Hollywood being this area where dreams are capture and put on film for all the world to see. Legions of men are described as walk through the streets of the back lot of a film studio, dressed up and ready to fight an imaginary battle for the entertainment of the movie going viewer. That was in the 1930s, but Hollywood still wants to capture us, and our money, with their larger than life display. Hollywood still is the master of fantastic illusions; but now those illusions are seeping of the silver screen and becoming reality.
In order to demonstrate what it is I am trying to portray: we must start at the types of movies that Hollywood is producing. Categorizing the movie list of the local theater into three categories - reality and fantasy - will show which of the areas Hollywood is focusing on the most. Reality is the category of movies where the events could or have happened. These movies do still include an essence of fantasy but are still pretty grounded in reality. Fantasy, although in come cases if you stretch it, are movies where the events are would not happen (like cheerleaders robbing a bank).
The movies that fall into my reality category are as follows:.
Cast Away - A man is marooned on a deserted island.
Save the last Dance - A girl faced with her mother's death has to overcome tradgedy to follow her dreams.
Traffic - Drugs continue to be smuggled into the U.S. as you follow the lives of characters on both sides, good and bad.
Chocolat - A woman opens a chocolate shop in a new conservative town, and is thought of as a radical.
Finding Forester - An athlete in a college has a special gift for writing and he searches out a legendary man to be his mentor.
The Pledge - A killer is on the loose and only one man can track him down.
