Stand by Me

The movie Stand by Me was based on the novel “The Body” written by Stephen King. The movie and novel was about four young boys who go on a two-day search for the dead body of a boy their age who was hit by a train outside Castle Rock in 1960. They talk about their dreams and fears, and face their own death along the way, but end up finding more than they ever dreamed of. The main characters are Chris, Gordie, Teddy and Vern. A story of friends who are on their way into adolescence, the movie and the novel shows the friends growing up to become adults. Maturity is a part of life and sometimes kids need to mature before their time.

In the present day, Gordie, a professional writer, reminisces back into the past of his childhood memories and how it leads to the death of his best friend Chris. When the boys are thirteen, Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern were very good friends. They shared a tree house together with a secret knock. The boys seem to be happy hanging out together. When they find out about the dead body of Ray Brower, the boys take a step closer to adolescence. Throughout the movie and novel, I can see the boys becoming mature. In the movie and novel, Gordie is given a chance to steer his life into the right path and

The contrast is when a book transfers over to a movie much of the content is not usually captured. When a reader reads a novel, they take their time and they get involved with characters and learn about them. The contrast between the novella and the film is that in the novella the characters are more understood than in the film. i.e. the closeness that Chris and Gordie have because of their family situations.

Another contrast is when a viewer watches a film, the director needs to copy the book but only had about two hours to do this. I don’t feel that the film shows how much Gordie’s parents shut him out since his brother’s death. It was as if Gordie did not even exist. In the book all his parents could think about their son, Dennis and in the film it wasn’t elaborated because of the time.

Every summer, they grow more and more together by doing unthinkable things like Teddy trying to dodge a train. Throughout the movie and novel, I can see the boys growing into maturity through symbolism and its significance to the story. Maturity is a part of life. Some people are forced to become mature at a younger age.
