The Renaissance

This paper will be discussing a time period in southern and northern Europe called the Renaissance. Some topics that will come up include the transformation of a new form of art, what the importance of humanism was, and the artist that were prevalent during this time.

The Renaissance is defined as the “Rebirth”. The “Rebirth” that is spoken about is the revived interest in the art and ideas of classical Greece and Rome. This was a period of new and renewed understanding which intern transformed the medieval world. The Renaissance was the break of light that peered through and broke the dark ages. During this time you see very similar characteristics as you do in early Greek and Roman art pieces.

An artistic movement during the Renaissance was Humanism. Humanism is the new philosophical, literary, and artistic movement. This movement also rediscovered the classical literature and painting characteristics of Greece and Rome. During Humanism, the focus shifted from God and the hereafter to humankind and the here and now. What is meant by this is that in art

The Late Renaissance was what followed the High Renaissance. This was a period of turmoil, revolution, and new expectations. By mid-sixteenth century, it had become increasingly difficult for artists to surpass such creators as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Paintings and other pieces of art in this time period showed vivid exaggerations of light, movement, spatial tension, and theatrical gestures. These traits are also shown later on in the Baroque Period to depict major storytelling

Rome and Venice were cities that were prominent during this period. The popular artists at this time were Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael. These artists developed a style of art that was calm, balanced, and idealized, reconciling Christian theology with Greek philosophy. See fig 3, 4, and 5 which are examples of these artists’ work.
