Group therapy is a treatment in which carefully selected emotionally ill persons are placed into a group by a therapists to effect personality change.Boundaries are of great practical importance to group interaction. These include Aims, Timing, Accommodation, and Psychological and Behavioral factors. AIMS: - this is the particular task of a group. For eg. Some groups may want to increase dependence amongst members, while other groups may want to increase the ability of self- coping (independence). TIMING: - psychotherapy groups are held regularly on an ongoing basis usually once a week whose sessions last 1 –1.5 hrs ideally. More frequent visits allow more intense interactions. While in those sessions where there is a mixed non-verbal/verbal approach last approximately 3 hrs to a whole weekend. Also it is frequently observed that however long the session, the most intensive interaction often occurs towards the end of the session. Apart from the frequency and length of individual sessions, it is important to consider whether the overall number of sessions should be fixed in advance. Also work in behavioral groups tends to support the theory that the slower members accelerates to keep up wit
Ending the group forces members back on their own. The ending may restimulate memories of previous endings and lead to a type of mourning reaction. b) Instillation of hope: - this plays an important role in those concerned with increasing self esteem through assertive training d) Altruism: - morale boosting effects that result from members of a group being able to help one another, rather than turning to the leader with their problems.
