Environmental Crisis. Catholic Challenge and Response

Humans were made in the image and likeness of an active and creative God, and are called to be active and creative amd to exercise sterwardship over the worlds resources and creatures stewardship implies a responsibility to respect the integrity of creation, to care for the earth and to use its gifts wisely. The CCT (Catholic-Christian Tradition) faces an environmental challenge where certain pressure groups or individuals are trying to influence the CCT to respond to the environmental crisis (EC).

The ex is an effect that has challenged the CCT. Other challenges include the indulgences in the middle ages, ungust wars and immigration.

The EC is a challenge because society is destroyinh nature, therefore society is destroying ourselves and losing religion in the process. Also in 1967, Lynn White a scientist that the Judeo-Christian interpretation of the Genesis creation stories had a great influence to the environmental crisis.

Historical, Social and Religious Context

The Industrial Revolution of the 19th Centure brought about significant changes to the way humans interact with the environment. The increase in urban population had continued causing a great increase in air pollution from cars, factories, heating etc. More an


The popular interpretation the CCT had up until the 80’s was that God created everything from afar, that humans were meant by God to subdue and bring the earth under control, and nature only had value because you could use it.

This has been misused to legitimate the exploitation of nature. The origional meaning of the tezt was not to license global pollution and the use of all natural resources. Nature no longer has value because we can benefit from its goodness, but the new interpretation according to Theologian Matthew Fox is that nature has value merely because it is beautiful.
