Should College Students Work and Attend School
Why do many college students hold a job when they are attending school? Well, there are many reasons actually. The main reason students take part time jobs is the money. Many students would not be able to attend school if they did not work. There is no other source of income other than their job, so they would have no way of paying for school. Students are also able to save money until William Barclay is standing by a conveyor belt taking packages and placing them inside a truck in the UPS facility where he works. Barclay is a part time employee who also attends County College of Morris in Randolph, N.J. He says that without his part time job he would not be able to attend college because he could not afford it (Sherrid 1). Many collage students say that working while going to school is a necessity because it allows them to pay for school, which otherwise they could not attend. These students also say that working has not had a negative affect on their academic performance. . However, others say that working has only made them spend less time on their studies therefore, causing lower grades. Why do college students make the decision to work and attend school? What are the advantaged and disadvantages of working and going
after graduation when they can get a job in their field of major. Ford states that many students said they also work because they like the job and it is a way of meeting new people and increasing their social life. However, according to other surveys, it seems that having a job while attending school does not have a negative affect on student's academic performance. In fact, in some cases it was found to have a positive affect on the student's grades. One study at the University of Illinois asked student workers several questions about their work and going to school. The responses showed that there was a positave relationship between the number of hours a student work and their grade point average (GPA)(Canabal, 2). This study also says that working is a good Idea because it helps the student in future employment. A job can help students learn skills for future job placement. “You'll find the post-graduation job search a lot easier with a resume and references you put together in college. And the workplace can be a great place to make friends with other employees or wise adults” (Caldwell, 1). A job can also teach a student to manage their time more efficiently. When a student has a job they tend to waste less time because they have less time. Because of this, the students make their homework and other duties a top priority. Fourth, a job can teach, "people skills" something that everyone will need. When students hold a job they will interact with all types of people. Where as in school students only interact with other students and teachers (Rowh, 2). J. Bosworth states that many students say they work because it gives them a chance to socialize and to meet new people who have the same interests that they do. This also allows them to meet adults who have been through school and can offer them advise on
