Buckle Up (Persuasion essay)

There are some common misconceptions about the fatality rate of slow moving vehicles. The truth is that all driving can be dangerous, and seatbelts should be worn regardless of speed or distance traveled. I hope to convince you why you should always wear a seatbelt. Whether it's going a block from your house or on a road trip, it is a dangerous game you play when you decide to not wear a seatbelt. With the help of two pro athletes" deaths, Mike Darr and Derrick Thomas, I hope to show that wearing a seatbelt will not only save your life, but also make you feel more secure while you are in a car.
Wearing your seatbelt while in a car greatly improves your chances to live should you get into a car accident. It is always much safer to have one on than off. The slowest fatal car accident was at 12mph where, of course, the person killed was not wearing a seatbelt. In most cases, if you wear a seatbelt, you will live and walk away unharmed. Except for some minor cuts and bruises, unless you were in a terrible accident, most likely you will still be alive. You should always wear your seatbelt even when going a short distance. 75 percent of all accidents happened within a radius of 25 miles from your home.
Seatbelts saved the lives of people who were involved in fatal accidents. For example, in the car crash that involved San Diego Padre, Mike Darr, Duane Johnson and a friend, Padres pitcher, Ben Howard, Mike and Duane died instantly, but Ben survived the crash only because he was wearing a seatbelt. .
In the case of another major car accident that happened January 24th, 2000, Derrick Thomas and a passenger were both in an SUV that flipped over. Both men where thrown out of the car. The passenger, a 49-year-old Mike Tellis, was killed instantly. Derrick Thomas survived the crash but was very badly hurt. However, even though he survived the crash, he died 15 days later due to complications from the accident.
