On Becoming an Inner Speaker

The first time I read Lee Glickstein's book Be Heard Now! I knew that this was the book that could provide me all the answers on how to become an authentic speaker. As confessed in class, I have a fear of public speaking and am even more afraid of exposing my inner self. The purpose of this paper is to reflect and assess my own individual presentation style. Through peer feedback and self reflection, I will discuss my strengths and weaknesses in terms of making public presentations. Finally, I will establish a future communication development of goals and how learning can be incorporated into all aspects of my life.

The first chapter of the Glickstein's book exposed me as an outer speaker (p. 9). An outer speaker is someone who hides their true selves and speaks to the audience as whole versus speaking individually to the members of the audience (p. 9). My first presentation clearly described the elements of someone who was an outer speaker. I was performing like an actor in a staged presentation. Even the props I used were consistent with stage acting. I have always been afraid of public speaking, however, I am more afraid of showing my true self. My performance

The verbal debriefing with the instructor and with my classmates also provided me with verbal feedback about my first presentation. I thought that this method was a very valuable tool because people tended to speak from the heart. I was less offended by what I heard versus from what was written. I was very disappointed not to have a debriefing process after my final presentation. In the future, I will be more persistent on getting feedback whether it is written and / or verbal because the best way to incorporate changes into your presentation is to read what people have to say.

Finding my inner self will be an adventure of a lifetime. One presentation has made me more confidant. I need to have more practise to fully utilize these skills valuable again. I was very lucky to work with a small group of people who I trusted and supported me. In the future, I will continue to follow and implement Glickstein's suggestions into my presentations. Being a leader is more than just being a public speaker, it is about being authentic and genuine in all aspects of your life.

Another goal that I want to continue working on is listening to my audience. I have found that it is important to listen to what your audience is saying and if necessary make the changes to your presentation to meet the audience needs rather than satisfy your own needs. By listening to your audience, I found it was possible to gage the general perception of the audience and develop a dialogue based on those needs. I found in my last presentation that the dialogue process was almost spiritual.
